Your first period: learning to go with the flow
If you haven’t gotten your first period yet, you probably have lots of questions. Luckily, we’ve got lots of answers!
Q: When will I get My First Period?
A: Every girl is different. Some of your friends may get their first period as early as 8 or 9, and some may get it as late as 16. The average age is about 12 or 13. The best way to find out when you’ll get yours: talk to your mom or sister. Chances are you’ll start to notice puberty and PMS symptoms around the same age they did.
Q: Will I know when My First Period is coming or is it like a surprise party?
A: Your body will try to let you know when you’re getting close, but it’s impossible to predict exactly when your first period will arrive. As you begin puberty, you may notice some changes: a little hair between your legs or under your arms, maybe a newfound need for a bra; you may even see a whitish discharge in your undies. These are early signs that your first period is on its way. The best way to be prepared is by carrying a pad and an extra pair of undies. Slip one in your purse or backpack; you never know when you or a friend may be in need!
Q: How long will My First Period last?
A: Again, everyone’s first period is different. Some girls only have their period for 3 days, while others can have it for up to 8. The average duration is 4-5 days, but it’s totally normal if your flow runs longer or shorter. Although frustrating, your first period, second or third may not all be the same. Irregular periods are common during the first few months of your period. So, don’t sweat it. The best way to understand what to expect is to use a period tracker for the first year or so of your period. Check out the Tampax period calendar so you can mark the day that your first period arrives and when it leaves. Eventually, you’ll notice a pattern.
Q: What’s better My First Period, Tampons or Pads?
A: They both provide great protection. The biggest difference is that pads are worn on the outside (on your undies) and tampons are worn inside your body. When you’re ready to try a tampon, we recommend starting with Tampax Pearl Active Lites. Their MotionFit Protection moves with you for leak-free workouts on your period and the Smooth Removal Layer gives you amazing comfort even on the lightest days of your period. Check out How to Insert A Tampon for a step-by-step guide so you’ll be ready when your first period arrives.
